The U.S. Coast Guard is trying to find a diver who went lacking close to the Vandenburg Wreck, a shipwreck off Florida’s Key West that serves as a synthetic reef, on Wednesday.
Air and floor crews are in search of Thomas Faulkenberry, 44, who was final seen sporting black dive gears and fins, the Coast Guard said in a post on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.
As of Thursday morning, the search was ongoing.
The wreck is a well-liked attraction within the waters close to Key West. The Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg was was initially commissioned in 1944 and was scuttled to the Florida Keys Shipwreck Path in Could 2009, the place it serves as a synthetic reef. The Vandenberg is the second-largest wreck ever for use as a synthetic reef and is about 145 ft underwater. It sits upright on the ocean flooring, and is about 100 ft tall at its highest level.
In 2021, a diver drowned close to the wreck, CBS Miami reported on the time. The diver, recognized as 50-year-old Jordan Jay Fisher, of Rockport, Texas, was together with her husband, two different folks and a divemaster. The group mentioned they overlooked Fisher when returning to the mooring line connecting them to their dive boat.
