Flying Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel has powered his method to his first Paris-Roubaix victory as he left his rivals reeling with a 15km solo assault on the finish of a sometimes eventful “Hell of the North” basic race.
Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was a part of a seven-rider main group that seized management with 50km of the 257km race remaining on Sunday.
He then launched an assault on the Carrefour de l’Arbre cobbled part after John Degenkolb (Group DSM) crashed closely and van der Poel’s perennial rival Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) punctured.
There was no stopping the 28-year-old van der Poel, already winner of Milan-San Remo this season, as he then surged away within the sunshine in direction of the end on the iconic Velodrome Andre-Petrieux to take his fourth ‘Monument’ basic.
On the second of two laps across the circuit, van der Poel may afford to exploit the cheers of the gang as he crossed the road. Within the battle for second place, his Alpecin-Deuceninck teammate Jasper Philipsen edged out fellow Belgian van Aert.
