Festive magic fuelled by nostalgia has been credited for the “astonishing” sale of a Christmas tree “purchased for pennies” greater than a century in the past, for £3411 ($6461) at public sale.
The 79-centimetre tree, full with 25 branches, 12 berries and 6 mini candle holders, was estimated to promote for under £60-80 ($114-$152) at public sale home Hansons Auctioneers within the south-eastern English county of Oxfordshire.
A worldwide bidding battle meant the ultimate end result far exceeded this, based on a press launch issued on Friday.
“The magic of Christmas lives on! The humblest Christmas tree on the earth has a brand new house and we’re delighted for each purchaser and vendor,” stated Charles Hanson, proprietor of Hansons Auctioneers, within the launch.
The Christmas tree arrived on the house of Dorothy Grant in Leicestershire in England’s East Midlands in 1920, when she was eight years outdated, and she or he was “wildly excited”, the public sale home stated within the launch.
She embellished it with cotton wool to imitate snow, since baubles had been lavish after World Battle I.
