A bipartisan group of greater than three dozen lawmakers known as on Gov. Hochul Monday to step in on a New York school campus to ban a pro-Palestinian scholar group that they are saying has spewed hate and endorsed violence.
“For years, a serious rising reason for concern on school campuses has been a bunch known as ‘College students for Justice in Palestine’ (SJP), which has chapters all through American Universities,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to the governor.
“At their occasions, SJP members and allies chant issues like ‘from New York to Gaza, Globalize the Intifada,’ ‘when individuals are occupied, resistance is justified,’ and ‘from the river to the ocean, Palestine can be free,’” the letter reads, including, “These chants are from the Hamas constitution and name for the loss of life and annihilation of Jews and Israel.”
The College students for Justice in Palestine have already been suspended at Columbia College after it was realized the group celebrated the terrorist assaults in Israel on Oct. 7 that led to greater than 1,200 deaths and a whole lot taken hostage.
The suspension was lauded by 500 alumni of the Ivy League college as the town sees a leap in antisemitic incidents following Israel’s warfare declaration in Gaza.
Professional-Israel Brooklyn Councilwoman Inna Vernikov led the lawmakers, which included seven Democrats and 33 Republicans at metropolis, county and state stage, on Monday calling on New York state to behave.
“They should be investigated and dismantled as a reliable group,” Vernikov stated of the group, which she described as a “widespread motion all through American school campuses that helps radical Islamist ideology.”
The pols demanded that any scholar teams that “explicitly endorse registered international terrorist organizations” be banned from New York universities.
“We request that you simply work with college Chancellors and Presidents, in addition to the U.S. Division of Justice to analyze additional and take fast and essential motion,” the letter reads.
“New York can’t fail in its authorized obligation to guard its Jewish college students,” the pols added.
Requires remark from the governor’s workplace weren’t returned.
Hochul stated final week that hate and terror probes have jumped “exponentially” since Hamas attacked Israel and has assigned extra State Police investigators to work with federal anti-terror models across the state in response.
