ISTANBUL — The mayor of Istanbul is warning that some 90,000 buildings might be susceptible to collapsing if a serious earthquake strikes Turkey’s largest metropolis. The warning comes because the loss of life toll from final week’s quake in Turkey and northern Syria now exceeds 40,000.
Istanbul’s Mayor Ekrum Imamoglu stated on a Turkish TV program that the present estimate of buildings susceptible to collapse in a quake is almost twice as massive because the earlier administration believed.
This comes after hundreds of buildings collapsed following final week’s lethal quake and as crews proceed working to search out victims.
“We now have to maneuver very quick” to enhance the buildings and convey them in step with Turkey’s building codes for constructing in earthquake-prone areas, Imamoglu stated.
He added that some 317,000 buildings have been granted amnesties.
Turkey sits atop a number of fault strains and is susceptible to earthquakes.
